Routine and Control
EVERY SINGLE DAY I have coffee at 11am, tea at 4pm and cheese at 6pm.
This work focuses on the way that routine, in conjunction with food, can act as a source of control. Allowing luxury at specific times can be restrictive, or alternatively enforce self-care. It makes things far too formal, or provides a happy occasion and means to interact with people. Routine is a playground for perfectionism and a trap of continuity.
Naturally, there is a very fine line between order and disorder when timing and routine is used to control one’s life. Restrictive eating can be taken to excess, and its failure can result in unstructured indulgence. Cakes can be stacked beautifully and topple into a grotesque mess. Where obsession over precision lies, there is also a menacing, threatening and unforgiving energy.
